Off shore day trips focus on School Blue Fin Tuna (SBFT) or Sharking or combinations of the two. Most day trips are south of Martha’s Vineyard unless previous arrangements have been made for an overnight at Nantucket and then off to The Regal Sword, BB Buoy or Crab Ledge depending upon where the bite is going off.

A day trip consists of a predawn departure to ensure we are on scene for best time utilization. We fish hard along the 25 to 50 fathom lines depending upon species targeted and water temperatures or temperature breaks. These one day trips run from 12 to 14 hours per outing. They also make for a great starting point to begin your off shore experiences prior to getting into Canyon Overnighters

If sharking we encourage tag and release fishing with some excellent photo ops throughout the day.

We had the good fortune of networking with a satellite tagging program where we hooked a Mako and called in the tagging boat. The crew from that boat actually leadered the beast and took vital information prior to placing a satellite pop up tag. Some four weeks later the tag popped off as planned and the data was transmitted via satellite to URI scientist.

That fish covered way more than 500 miles in four weeks time and spent the time all over the water column including depths up to 200 meters. What we can learn from these experiments is amazing. If you haven’t tried tag and release fishing it’s a real good thing!
